Michael Rasmussen is officially one step closer to becoming a pro hockey player.

The Red Wings announced today that they have signed their first-round pick from this summer’s NHL Draft to a three-year entry-level contract.

Rasmussen was the No. 9 overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft; the Wings’ highest selection since 1990. A 6-foot-6, 221-pound forward, Rasmussen is currently skating with Team Canada at the World Junior Summer Showcase in Plymouth.

He will be the captain of his Tri-City Americans of the WHL for the 2017-18 season. Last year, he posted 32 goals despite missing 22 games due to a wrist injury. The WJSS marks his first competition since his return from injury.
