The Spartans have lost a top player.

Michigan State announced today that Mason Appleton has signed with the Winnipeg Jets, the club that drafted him in the sixth round of the 2015 NHL Draft.

Appleton, a native of Green Bay, Wisc., was slated to be the Spartans’ captain for the 2017-18 season.

The soon-to-be junior forward posted 37 points in 35 games with the Spartans last season, a nine-point increase from his rookie year.

He came to the Spartans after posting 40 points in 54 games for the Tri-City Storm of the USHL.
