The Detroit Red Wings stayed close to home for their next goaltender.

The Wings have claimed Muskegon Lumberjacks goaltender Keith Petruzzelli in the 2017 NHL Draft.

Petruzzelli was named USA Hockey’s Goalie of the Year after an outstanding season with the Michigan-based USHL franchise.

He was ranked the No. 2 goaltender among North American netminders heading into the draft.

Petruzzelli will be heading to Quinnipiac next fall.

Last year, he recorded a .918 save percentage and a 2.40 goals-against average in 35 games with Muskegon – 22 of which were wins. He was named an MVP of the NHL/USHL Top Prospects Game, as well.

He has had the opportunity to learn under Detroit native and goaltending great John Vanbiesbrouck, who is the GM of the Muskegon franchise.
