When he’s done in Muskegon, Travis Mitchell will be heading to New York.

The Lumberjacks defenseman and South Lyon native has committed to Cornell for his college hockey career.

“When I walked around campus I felt like Cornell was a great fit for me,” Mitchell told MiHockey. “The education I will receive from Cornell will challenge me as a student and prepare me for the future.”

The 1999 birth-year player played in 38 games with the Lumberjacks as a rookie blueliner this past season, logging six points in the process.

He was originally a 21st-round selection of the club in the 2016 USHL Draft; he impressed at the team’s ensuing camp and secured a spot in the line-up shortly thereafter.

Mitchell said he looks forward to being able to play for Mike Schafer and the Big Red coaching staff.

“Cornell has a very strong hockey program and coaching staff,” Mitchell said. “I look forward to working with Coach Schafer, Coach Syer and Coach Flanagan.”
