The University of Michigan hockey program has picked up one of its first high-profile recruits since Mel Pearson replaced Red Berenson.

The most-recent commit has a last name very familiar to the Michigan hockey audience, too.

Philippe Lapointe, son of former Red Wing Martin Lapointe, announced on Father’s Day that he has committed to the Wolverines.

The younger Lapointe just concluded his first season with Shattuck St. Mary’s in Minnesota after spending his formative years with the Chicago Mission AAA program.

“Picking Michigan for me was a no-brainer,” Lapointe told MiHockey. “The history and atmosphere here is amazing. Also the coaching staff is top notch and I’ve heard nothing but wonderful things. I feel that with this coaching staff, I’m put in the best environment to reach my highest potential as a hockey player and as a person.”

Listed as a native of Hinsdale, Ill, Lapointe was a third-round pick of the Lincoln Stars in the 2016 USHL Futures Draft. He’s also a Guelph Storm draftee. He’s been an invitee to the USA Hockey player development camp the last two seasons, as well.

Lapointe certainly doesn’t remember his family’s time in Michigan – the 2000 birth-year player was born just before his dad’s last season in Hockeytown.

He knows he’s entering a prestigious college hockey program in a hockey-crazed state, however.

“Michigan is known as one of best hockey programs in the nation, with an incredible and dedicated fan base,” he said. “I’m grateful to be going to such a great school. Playing college hockey has been a dream of mine and I can’t wait for the opportunity in the upcoming years.”
