Traveling out to the west coast wasn’t a problem in Game 1 for the Griffins.

Grand Rapids recorded a 3-1 victory tonight against the San Jose Barracuda to start their AHL Western Conference Finals match-up with a win.

Mitch Callahan, Ben Street and Matthew Ford scored for the Griffins, while Jared Coreau turned aside 26 of the 27 shots sent his way.

Eric Tangradi set up the Griffins’ first two goals as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 9:53 of play.

Ford’s goal came at the 10:58 mark of the third – a power-play strike to increase the Griffins’ lead back to two.

Game 2 takes place in San Jose Sunday. The Griffins host their first game of the series on Wednesday; puck drops at Van Andel Arena at 7 p.m.
