The Red Wings are heading into a bye week, but there will be no time off for Jared Coreau.

The Red Wings announced today that Coreau has been assigned to Grand Rapids for a conditioning stint.

Coreau has performed well in his first taste of NHL hockey as replacement for an injured Jimmy Howard; he appeared in 13 games and registered a 5-3-3 record, a 3.27 goals-against average, a 0.893 save percentage and team-best two shutouts.

A native of Perth, Ontario and an alum of Northern Michigan, the 25-year-old goaltender holds a 56-33-3 record with a 2.39 goals-against average, 0.922 save percentage and 10 shutouts over his four seasons with the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Coreau’s assignment to Grand Rapids should not be read as an indication that Howard is returning to action, as indicated by Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill last night after the Wings’ game with the New York Islanders.

“Jimmy, right now, will go on break,” Blashill said. “He hasn’t made as much progress as we’ve wanted him to. He still can’t do certain things in the butterfly position. It’s a tough injury for a goalie. It’s obviously the same injury – to a large degree, a similar injury that kept Carey Price out most of last year, and Jimmy has been trying to get back, but we’re gonna have to take it day-by-day.”
