Boys High School Hockey Players of the Week: Jan. 30-Feb. 5 (presented by Lawrence Tech Hockey)

TheHS Hockey coverage Michigan High School Hockey Coaches’ Association and Lawrence Tech Hockey have teamed up to create players of the week and players of the month awards, and they have formed a selection committee to help with the process.

Each week, the committee members will take the top nominated players by their respective coaches and high school programs and rank the individual performances. From there, players will be selected from their respective divisions as ‘players of the week.’

MiHockey’s Michael Caples and Stefan Kubus are two of the committee members.

Announced Wednesday, here are the latest Lawrence Tech Hockey High School Players of the Week (for games played from Jan. 30-Feb. 5). Winners per region are in bold, honorable mentions are in italics.

 

North Region: Rory Anderson, Senior Forward, Calumet

Rory Anderson led Calumet to a 2-1-0 record by scoring 1 goal and 5 assists. Anderson had 3 assists in a 5-2 win over rival (#5 D3) Hancock. The senior forward would score 1 goal and 1 assist in Calumet’s 4-3 win over (#10 D2) Romeo at the MIHL Showcase. He would add 1 assist in a 4-3 shootout loss to (#4 D1) Northville on Friday morning at the MIHL Showcase. The Copper Kings are currently ranked 4th in Division 3 with a 14-6-1 record.

Honorable Mention: Barrett Bishop (Sr. Forward, Traverse City Central), Jacob Kruse (Sr. Forward, Houghton)

 

South Region: Michael Considine, Senior Forward, Novi-Detroit Catholic Central

Considine had a big weekend at the MIHL Showcase for the Shamrocks. The senior forward scored 2 goals in CC’s 3-0 win over Notre Dame Academy (WI). He remained hot on Saturday, scoring 2 goals and 1 assist in a 6-1 win over the Novi Wildcats. Novi-Detroit Catholic Central is currently ranked 3rd in Division 1 with a 13-6-1 record.

Honorable Mention: Nico McCurrach (So. Forward, Ann Arbor Huron), Scott Granzotto (Sr. Forward, Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard)

 

Central Region: Parker Rey, Sophomore Goaltender, Flint Powers Catholic

Parkey Rey stood on his head stopping 31 shots at the MIHL Showcase to help Flint Powers defeat (#6 D2) Livonia Stevenson 2-0. The shutout was Rey’s 3rd of the season and the 31 saves were a season high. Flint Powers Catholic is currently ranked 1st in Division 1 with a 19-1-0 record.

Honorable Mention: Sam Spaedt (Sr. Forward, Saginaw Heritage), Nathan George (Sr. Goaltender, Howell)

 

West Region: Ben Burns, Senior Forward, West Ottawa

Burns had a big week for West Ottawa scoring 4 goals and 3 assists in three games. Burns helped West Ottawa tie rival Grand Rapids Christian by scoring 2 goals and 1 assist in a 3-3 tie. Burns continued the week by scoring 1 goal and 2 assists against Marysville to lead West Ottawa to a 4-1 win. The senior forward would add 1 goal in a 4-0 win over Grand Ledge Fowlerville. West Ottawa is currently 12-6-1 on the season with Burns leading the team in scoring with 34 points.

Honorable Mention: Will Ignatovich (Sr. Goaltender, Byron Center), Brendan Baranoski (Sr. Forward, East Grand Rapids)

 

Metro East Region: Troy Saunby, Junior Forward, Anchor Bay

Troy Saunby had a productive week for Anchor Bay scoring 2 goals and 4 assists in two games. Saunby would factor in on all six goals scored by Anchor Bay in a pair of losses. Anchor Bay lost to Livonia Franklin 5-4 and Marysville 4-2. The junior forward has 16 goals and 17 assists for 33 points in 15 games.

Honorable Mention: Joey Morris (Jr. Forward, Romeo), Jacob Helzer (Jr. Forward, Lake Orion)

 

Metro West Region: Brett Miller, Senior Goaltender, Northville

Brett Miller had a busy weekend at the MIHL Showcase in Trenton, Michigan. The senior netminder stopped 32 shots on Friday to lead the Mustangs to a 4-3 shootout victory over (#4 D3) Calumet. On Saturday, he would stop 27 shots to help Northville defeat Houghton 4-1. Miller is 12-5-1 on the season with a 2.23 gaa and a .919 save percentage. Northville sits at 4th in Division 1 with a 13-5-1 record.

Honorable Mention: Joe Wozniak (Sr. Defenseman, Livonia Churchill), Matt Schaumburger (Sr. Forward, Salem)

 

Metro North Region: Henry Gabriel, Senior Forward, Royal Oak

Henry Gabriel terrorized his competition, scoring 8 goals and 2 assists in two games. Gabriel led Royal Oak to a 9-1 win over Clarkston by scoring 6 goals. He would add another impressive effort on the week when the Ravens traveled to Oxford Avondale United, Gabriel would score 2 goals and 2 assists in a 4-1 win. The senior forward is second in the state in scoring with 39 goals, 32 assists, and 71 points in 19 games.

Honorable Mention: Joe Valascho (Jr. Goaltender, Brother Rice), Andrew Grewette (Sr. Goaltender, Warren DeLaSalle)

 

Metro South Region: Blake Petterle, Junior Defenseman, Grosse Ile

Blake Petterle led Grosse Ile to a 2-0 record by scoring 2 goals and 8 assists. Petterle assisted on 3 goals in Grosse Ile’s 4-0 win over Airport/Flat Rock. The junior blueliner would score 2 goals and 5 assists in an 8-3 win over Monroe United. Petterle leads the Red Devils in scoring with 13 goals and 34 assists in 19 games.

Honorable Mention: Tyler Balogh (Sr. Forward, Southgate Anderson), Andrew Miller (Sr. Forward, New Boston Huron)
