Boys High School Hockey Players of the Month: January (presented by Lawrence Tech Hockey)

TheHS Hockey coverage Michigan High School Hockey Coaches’ Association and Lawrence Tech Hockey have teamed up to create new players of the week and players of the month awards, and they have formed a selection committee to help with the process.

Each week, the committee members will take the top nominated players by their respective coaches and high school programs and rank the individual performances. From there, players will be selected from their respective divisions as ‘players of the week.’

MiHockey’s Michael Caples and Stefan Kubus are two of the committee members.

Announced Wednesday, here are the Lawrence Tech Hockey High School Players of the Month for January. Winners per region are in bold, honorable mentions are in italics.

 

North Region: Brent Loukus, Sophomore Forward, Calumet

Brent Loukus had a big month for Calumet scoring 10 goals and 12 assists to lead the Copper Kings to an 8-0 month. Calumet surged up the rankings finishing January ranked 5th in Division 3 with a 10-5-1 record. Calumet’s next game is against (#6 D1) Northville on Friday, Feb. 3 at the MIHL Showcase in Trenton.

Honorable Mention: Tyler Bergwall (So. Goaltender, Marquette), Jacob Kruse (Sr. Forward, Houghton)

 

South Region: Jake Crespi, Senior Forward, Brighton

Jake Crespi led the #1 team in Division 1 to a 7-1-0 record in January by scoring 7 goals and 9 assists. Brighton defeated (#2 D1) Novi-Detroit Catholic Central 2-1 and (#8 D2) Plymouth 2-0 during their impressive month. The Bulldogs next game is against St. Ignatius on Friday, Feb. 3 at the MIHL Showcase in Trenton.

Honorable Mention: Brennan Wright (Jr. Forward, Chelsea), Samuel Millman (Sr. Forward, Ann Arbor Pioneer)

 

Central Region: Brendan Smith, Senior Forward, Flint Powers Catholic Central

Smith had a huge month for the Chargers scoring 9 goals and 15 assists to help keep Flint Powers undefeated and ranked #1 in the state. Flint Powers is 17-0-0 on the season and will look to remain undefeated this weekend when they compete at the MIHL Showcase in Trenton.

Honorable Mention: Sam Spaedt (Sr. Forward, Saginaw Heritage), Shane Astrike (So. Forward, Midland Dow)

 

West Region: Anthony Shrum, Senior Goaltender, Mona Shores

Anthony Shrum had a busy January stopping 317 shots in 9 games. The senior netminder posted 2 shutouts, shutting out Grand Rapids Catholic Central (36 saves) and Rockford (47 saves). Shrum ending the month with a 2.00 goals against average and a 94.6% save percentage. Shrum and the Mona Shores Sailors will hit the ice on Friday, Feb. 3 when they take on Port Huron Northern at the MIHL Showcase.

Honorable Mention: Zach Currie (Sr. Forward, Forest Hills Central), Benjamin Forstner (Jr. Forward, East Grand Rapids)

 

Metro East Region: Jordan Guske, Senior Forward, Anchor Bay

Jordan Guske continued his monster season with another huge month. Guske scored 12 goals and 10 assists to lead Anchor Bay to a 4-3-0 record in January. Anchor Bay will be hitting the ice tonight (Wednesday, Feb. 1) to take on division rival Marysville.

Honorable Mention: Adam Pitters (Sr. Forward, Grosse Pointe South), Jack Barker (Sr. Goaltender, Lake Orion)

 

Metro West Region: Will Tagge, Junior Goaltender, Livonia Stevenson

Will Tagge was stellar between the pipes for the Spartans in January. The junior goaltender allowed only 6 goals in his 6 starts, shutting out 3 opponents in January. Tagge kept Livonia Franklin, Traverse City Central, and Traverse City West scoreless. Livonia Stevenson will take the ice on Friday, Feb. 3 to take on Hancock at the MIHL Showcase.

Honorable Mention:  Josh Albring (Sr. Forward, Hartland), Jack Sargent (Jr. Defenseman, Northville)

 

Metro North Region: Gregory Pine, Senior Forward, Warren DeLaSalle

Gregory Pine stepped up big in January scoring 8 goals and 5 assists for Warren DeLaSalle to help the team finish January with a 5-2-0 record. Warren DeLaSalle is currently ranked 3rd in Division 3 with a record of 12-4-1. DeLaSalle will compete against Houghton on Friday, Feb. 3 in the MIHL Showcase.

Honorable Mention: Michael McInerney (Sr. Forward, Brother Rice), Henry Gabriel (Sr. Forward, Royal Oak)

 

Metro South Region: Andrew Miller, Senior Forward, New Boston Huron

Andrew Miller was a force to be reckoned with in January. The senior forward netted 18 goals and 9 assists in only 7 games. Miller’s offensive outburst helped New Boston Huron finish January with a 5-2-0 record. The Chiefs host Monroe St. Mary’s Catholic Central tonight (Wednesday, Feb. 1) in a Huron League game.

Honorable Mention: Jason Tyer (Sr. Defenseman, Dearborn Unified), Tyler Balogh (Sr. Forward, Southgate Anderson)
