The New York Islanders have announced that they have fired head coach Jack Capuano and named Michigan native Doug Weight as the interim bench boss.

Weight, a native of Warren, Mich., is currently the Islanders’ assistant coach and assistant general manager.

A product of Lake Superior State, Weight played 19 seasons in the NHL, concluding his career with the Islanders and moving into the coaching and management position with the club.

A second-round draft pick of the New York Rangers, Weight recorded 278 goals and 755 assists during his lengthy career. He won the Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006, and he played for Team USA in three different Olympic Winter Games (1998, 2002 and 2006).

His 14 assists and 19 points in the 1991 IIHF World Junior Championship is still a Team USA record, as well.

Weight was inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013.
