EAST LANSING – The Spartans won Round 1, but Cooper Marody and the Wolverines got the last laugh Saturday night.

The Michigan sophomore forward and Brighton native scored the lone goal in a shootout at Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing, after the two in-state rivals battled to a 2-2 tie through regulation and a 5-minute overtime in the second of their home-and-home series.

Nolan De Jong and Alex Kile scored in regulation for Michigan, while Zach Nagelvoort stopped 25 of the 27 shots sent his way.

For the Spartans, Dylan Pavelek and Patrick Khodorenko scored in a contest where MSU had a chance for their first weekend sweep of the Wolverines since 2009. Ed Minney stopped 23 of 25 shots.

The storied rivals meet again in three weeks, playing their annual “Duel in the D” game at Joe Louis Arena on Feb. 10 and then at Yost Ice Arena the following night.
