Boys High School Hockey Players of the Week: Jan. 9-16 (presented by Lawrence Tech Hockey)

TheHS Hockey coverage Michigan High School Hockey Coaches’ Association and Lawrence Tech Hockey have teamed up to create new players of the week and players of the month awards, and they have formed a selection committee to help with the process.

Each week, the committee members will take the top nominated players by their respective coaches and high school programs and rank the individual performances. From there, players will be selected from their respective divisions as ‘players of the week.’

MiHockey’s Michael Caples and Stefan Kubus are two of the committee members.

Announced Wednesday, here are the latest Lawrence Tech Hockey High School Players of the Week (for games played from Jan. 9-16). Winners per region are in bold, honorable mentions are in italics.

 

North Region: Brent Loukus, Sophomore Forward, Calumet

Loukus had a big weekend for Calumet scoring 4 goals and 3 assists in back-to-back victories against U of D-Jesuit. Calumet defeated U of D-Jesuit 7-2 and 2-1. Calumet is 6-5-1 and currently ranked 7th in Division 3. The Copper Kings will host Escanaba on Thursday, January 19th in a Great Lakes Conference battle.

Honorable Mention: Lance Kangas (Sr. Forward, Hancock), Trevor Anderson (So. Goaltender, Kingsford)

 

South Region: Sam Millman, Senior Forward, Ann Arbor Pioneer

Millman had a huge week for the Pioneers scoring 5 goals and 4 assists in two games. The senior forward led the Pioneers to a 2-0 week defeating Temperance Bedford 4-0 and Cheboygan 7-1. Ann Arbor Pioneer is 9-3-2 this season. The Pioneers will travel to Chelsea on Friday, January 20th to take on the Bulldogs.

Honorable Mention: Braden Steele (Jr. Forward, Chelsea), Joey Hollenshead (Jr. Defenseman, AA Huron)

 

Central Region: Shane Astrike, Sophomore Forward, Midland Dow

Shane Astrike had the hot stick against Tri-Valley assisting on all three Midland Dow goals. Astrike’s efforts would like Midland Dow to a 3-2 victory. Midland Dow is 7-6-0 this season.

Honorable Mention: Cam Conover (Jr. Forward, Flint Powers), Sam Spaedt (Sr. Forward, Saginaw Heritage)

 

West Region: Anthony Shrum, Senior Goaltender, Mona Shores

Shrum was on top of his game this week stopping every shot he faced. The senior netminder would stop 80 shots in total to shutout Grand Rapids Catholic Central (0-0 tie) and Rockford (3-0 win). Mona Shores is currently 4-8-1 on the season but sit in 3rd place in their conference with a 2-2-1 conference record. Mona Shores will compete tonight against conference rival Reeths-Puffer.

Honorable Mention: Nicko Withey (Sr. Forward, Forest Hills Central), Alan Kolenda (Sr. Goaltender, Grand Rapids West Catholic)

 

Metro East Region: Ryan Maselli, Senior Forward, Rochester Stoney Creek

Maselli had a monster week for Stoney Creek scoring 2 goals and 4 assists with a +6 rating. Maselli scored the overtime winner against Farmington and followed that performance up with a goal and three assists in a 7-4 victory over Berkley. Stoney Creek is currently 6-6-0 on the season. Stoney Creek will take the ice against Lake Orion on Thursday, January 19.

Honorable Mention: Jordan Guske (Sr. Forward, Anchor Bay), Jack Barker (Sr. Goaltender, Lake Orion)

 

Metro West Region: Tyler Haydu, Junior Forward, Livonia Churchill

Tyler Haydu came up big for the Chargers against division rival Plymouth. The junior forward scored 1 goal and 1 assist to lead Livonia Churchill to a 4-1 win over (#3 D2) Plymouth. Haydu added 2 goals and an assist in a 9-1 win over Walled Lake Western. Livonia Churchill is currently ranked 4th in Division 2 with a 8-2-0 record. The Chargers hit the ice tonight at 7:15 pm in a big KLAA game against (#8 D2) Novi.

Honorable Mention: Matt Schaumburger (Sr. Forward, Salem), Brandon Rambeur (Sr. Forward, Lakeland)

 

Metro North Region: Danny Caton, Senior Forward, Notre Dame Prep

Danny Caton was a consistent force for Notre Dame Prep scoring 1 goal and 6 assists in three games. Notre Dame Prep went 3-0 on the week with victories over Farmington Hills Unified, South Bend St. Joe’s, and South Bend Lake Shore. Notre Dame Prep is experiencing a great season under Coach Crouse with a 12-2-1 record. Notre Dame Prep will square off against L’Anse Creuse United tonight at 7:45 pm in Troy.

Honorable Mention: Gregory Pine (Sr. Forward, DeLaSalle), Matt Bainbridge (Jr. Forward, L’Anse Creuse Unified)

 

Metro South Region: Joseph Sant’Angelo, Senior Goaltender, Trenton

Joseph Sant’Angelo was huge between the pipes for the Trojans stopping 24 shots in a 3-1 win over rival Wyandotte. The Trojans are currently ranked 7th in Division 2 with a 7-5-1 record. Trenton will face-off against the Norsemen of Grosse Pointe tonight at 7:30 pm in Trenton.
