Boys High School Hockey Players of the Week: Jan. 16-22 (presented by Lawrence Tech Hockey)

TheHS Hockey coverage Michigan High School Hockey Coaches’ Association and Lawrence Tech Hockey have teamed up to create new players of the week and players of the month awards, and they have formed a selection committee to help with the process.

Each week, the committee members will take the top nominated players by their respective coaches and high school programs and rank the individual performances. From there, players will be selected from their respective divisions as ‘players of the week.’

MiHockey’s Michael Caples and Stefan Kubus are two of the committee members.

Announced Wednesday, here are the latest Lawrence Tech Hockey High School Players of the Week (for games played from Jan. 16-22). Winners per region are in bold, honorable mentions are in italics.

 

North Region: Brenden Middleton, Senior Forward, Jeffers

Brenden scored 4 goals and an assist to lead Jeffers to a conference victory over Negaunee. Jeffers currently sits in 1st place in the Lake Superior conference and are 7-7-1 overall on the season.

Honorable Mention: Trevor Johnson (Sr. Defenseman, Calumet), Jacob Kruse (Sr. Forward, Houghton)

 

South Region: Ben Peterson, Junior Forward, Brighton

Peterson had a big week for the Bulldogs getting 3 assists in Brighton’s 8-0 victory over Livonia Franklin. The junior forward would score 3 goals and 1 assist in Brighton’s 5-1 win over Salem. Brighton is currently ranked 2nd in Division 1 with a 15-2-0 record.

Honorable Mention: Michael Osinski (Sr. Defenseman, Milford), Ben O’Brien (Jr. Goaltender, Chelsea)

 

Central Region: Casey LaRue, Junior Forward, Midland Dow

LaRue was all over the score sheet last week scoring 3 goals and 2 assists in a 7-1 win over Lapeer. Casey would follow up that performance with a 3 assist night in Dow’s 4-2 win over Bay City. Midland Dow currently sits in 3rd place of the Saginaw Valley conference with an overall record of 9-6-0.

Honorable Mention: Noah McNutt (Jr. Forward, Port Huron Northern), Mason Weiss (So. Forward, Flint Powers)

 

West Region: Zach Currie, Senior Forward, Forest Hills Central

December’s Player of the Month had another huge week for Forest Hills Central. Zach Currie scored 4 goals and 3 assists to lead FHC to victories over (#9 D2) Grand Rapids Christian (8-4) and Mona Shores (5-4). Forest Hills Central is currently ranked 2nd in Division 3 with a record of 16-1-1.

Honorable Mention: Lukas Schut (Jr. Goaltender, Grand Rapids East), Brad Kolinski (So. Defenseman, Mattawan)

 

Metro East Region: Jack Barker, Senior Goaltender, Lake Orion

Jack Barker was a stone wall for Lake Orion allowing only two goals all week. The senior netminder stopped 64 shots on the week leading the Dragons to victories over (#6 D3) Allen Park (3-1) and Rochester Stoney Creek (4-1). Lake Orion is currently ranked 9th in Division 1 with a record of 10-3-2.

Honorable Mention: Matt Haist (Jr. Forward, Utica Eisenhower), Camden Mills (Jr. Goaltender, Grosse Pointe South)

 

Metro West Region: Jack Sargent, Junior Defenseman, Northville

Jack Sargent led the Mustangs to back-to-back victories over South Lyon Unified (6-4, 5-3) by scoring 2 goals and 1 assist. Northville is currently ranked 4th in Division 1 with a 10-5-0 record.

Honorable Mention: Ricky Rayner (Sr. Forward, Lakeland), Rees Dobbs (Sr. Forward, Lakeland)

 

Metro North Region: Blake Tosto, Senior Forward, Brother Rice

Tosto scored 2 goals and 1 assist in a 4-3 win over (#1 D1) Novi-Detroit Catholic Central. The senior forward added 2 assists against (#10 D2) Marquette as well as 2 goals against (#9 D3) Sault Ste Marie. Brother Rice is currently ranked 2nd in Division 2 with a 13-3-0 record.

Honorable Mention: Gregory Pine (Sr. Forward, DeLaSalle), Henry Gabriel (Sr. Forward, Royal Oak)

 

Metro South Region: Anthony Lemerand, Senior Goaltender, Trenton

Anthony Lemerand came up huge for the Trojans stopping 35 shots to lead Trenton to a 4-0 victory over rival (#4 D2) Livonia Stevenson. Trenton is currently ranked 6th in Division 2 with a 8-6-1 record. The Trojans will travel to USA Hockey Arena tonight to face-off against (#1 D1) Novi-Detroit Catholic Central.

Honorable Mention: Tyler Balogh (Sr. Forward, Southgate Anderson), Andrew White (Jr. Forward, Dearborn Unified)
