Boys High School Hockey Players of the Week: Dec. 12-18 (presented by Lawrence Tech Hockey)

TheHS Hockey coverage Michigan High School Hockey Coaches’ Association and Lawrence Tech Hockey have teamed up to create new players of the week and players of the month awards, and they have formed a selection committee to help with the process.

Each week, the committee members will take the top nominated players by their respective coaches and high school programs and rank the individual performances. From there, players will be selected from their respective divisions as ‘players of the week.’

MiHockey’s Michael Caples and Stefan Kubus are two of the committee members.

Announced Wednesday, here are the latest Lawrence Tech Hockey High School Players of the Week (for games played from Dec. 12-18). Winners per region are in bold, honorable mentions are in italics.

 

North Region: Alex Nordstrom, Sophomore Forward, Hancock

Nordstrom continues to dominate the North Region. He scored a hat trick and added two assists while going plus-six in a 7-1 victory over Escanaba. This is the second time Nordstrom has won Player of the Week this season.

Honorable Mention: Christian Julian (Sr. Forward, Traverse City West), Kyle Trucks (Sr. Forward, Mt. Pleasant)

 

South Region: Ryan Wilson, Senior Forward, Ann Arbor Skyline

Ryan Wilson was unstoppable in an 8-1 win over Monroe United. Wilson would score two goals, three assists, and finish plus-six in Skyline’s win.

Honorable Mention: Gabe Bettley (Sr. Forward, Milford), Jack Miling (Jr. Forward, Ann Arbor Pioneer)

 

Central Region: Brendan Witt, Senior Forward, Midland

To say Brendan Witt was an important part of Midland’s offense would be an understatement. The senior forward had a role in all 12 goals scored by Midland last week as he would score 7 goals and 5 assists.

Honorable Mention: Brendan Smith (Sr. Forward, Flint Powers), Russell Daavetila (Jr. Forward, Howell)

 

West Region: Colin Powers, Senior Forward, Reeths-Puffer

Colin Powers was an offensive force last week, leading Reeths-Puffer to a 3-0 record. Powers would score 3 goals and add 3 assists to help his team defeat East Grand Rapids (#8 in D3), Grand Rapids Catholic Central (#9 in D3), and East Kentwood.

Honorable Mention: Zebedee Miller (Sr. Forward, West Ottawa), Hunter Taplin (Sr. Defenseman, Kalamazoo United)

 

Metro East Region: Joey DeMarte, Senior Forward, Anchor Bay

Joey DeMarte had an easy time finding the back of the net last week as he scored five goals in two games and added two assists. Anchor Bay went 1-1 on the week.

Honorable Mention: Joe Briskey (Sr. Forward, Lake Orion), Spencer Stefani (Jr. Forward, University of Liggett)

 

Metro West Region: Jordan Venegoni, Junio Forward, Livonia Churchill

Venegoni was unstoppable for the Chargers, as he would score five goals and five assists to lead Livonia Churchill to big wins over city rival Livonia Franklin and South Lyon.

Honorable Mention: Ben McColl (So. Forward, Farmington Unified), Jacob Frelich (Sr. Forward, Walled Lake Northern)

 

Metro North Region: Thomas Hernandez, Senior Forward, Warren DeLaSalle

Thomas Hernandez came up huge for the Pilots this week. He would lead the team to a 3-0 record by scoring five goals and assisting on seven more. DeLaSalle defeated U of D Jesuit twice (6-5 in overtime and 3-1) and Port Huron Northern.

Honorable Mention: Mitch Shults (Sr. Forward, Brother Rice), Stephen Gortat (Sr. Forward, Warren Mott)

 

Metro South Region: Brandon Morgan, Senior Forward, Trenton

Brandon Morgan scored three goals and four assists to help Trenton go 2-0 on the week. Trenton defeated Brownstown Woodhaven and Grosse Pointe North.

Honorable Mention: Lucas Collins (Sr. Goaltender, Monroe St. Mary’s Catholic Central), Chase Havens (So. Forward, Grosse Ile)
