The University of Michigan landed a coveted recruit over the weekend as they secured a verbal commitment from Antonio Stranges.

The 2002 birth-year player – a Plymouth native – is currently playing against older competition as a member of the midget minor Little Caesars AAA squad, and he has four points in eight High Performance Hockey League games so far.

Stranges told MiHockey that the history of the Wolverines drew him to Ann Arbor.

“Michigan has a long history of success as a college hockey program,” he said. “I wanted to go to a school that has a chance to win on a year-to-year basis.”

Stranges, who played for Belle Tire as a bantam minor before joining Little Caesars’ bantam major squad last year, is a few years away from living out his college hockey dream, but he said selecting the Wolverines was a decision to help his hockey career.

“As an individual I also look at the many players that have moved on to have successful professional careers [from Michigan],” he said. “I am really excited that I will be a part of a storied university to continue my development both on and off ice.”

Last year, Stranges recorded 24 points in 20 HPHL games playing against ’01 birth-year players on the Little Caesars bantam major team.
