Here’s how the Michigan schools fared in NCAA D-I action this past weekend.

Lockwood leads Michigan to victory over Arizona State

Michigan defeated Arizona State on the road 4-1 on Friday.

Picking up his first win of the season, Zach Nagelvoort stopped 31 shots on goal for the Wolverines.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first period. Senior captain Nolan De Jong got the scoring started midway through the period with the first goal of his career. ASU answered with a goal from Joe Lappin six minutes later to tie it up.

The Wolverines took charge of the game after the first.

Will Lockwood regained the lead for Michigan with his first goal of the night six minutes into the second stanza. Adam Winborg scored his second goal in two games to extend the Wolverines’ lead midway through the period.

Lockwood’s second of the night came on the penalty kill at the 9:50 mark of the third period.

The Wolverines return home to face No. 4 Boston College in a two-game series next week.

Western sweeps Miami in home series

WMU hosted Miami University at Lawson Ice Arena this weekend, and kicked off the series by winning 6-3 on Friday night.

The Broncos went on a tear in the third period, scoring three goals in what looked to be a game that would come down to the final minutes.

The teams traded goals in the first period; the first tally came from Jade McMullen to put the Broncos on top briefly. The RedHawks’ Anthony Louis answered just over a minute later to tie the game after the first.

The back-and-forth battle continued into the second. Corey Schueneman regained the lead for the Broncos two minutes into the period before Louis struck again for the RedHawks with his power-play goal under two minutes later.

Miami had their first and only lead of the game with another tally on the power play from Kiefer Sherwood midway through the game. Not long after, the Broncos again tied the game off a Fredrick Tiffels tally. That put the game at 3-3 heading into the third period.

Paul Stoykewych gave WMU the lead with what would be a game winning goal with 13:45 left to go. Brownstown native Matheson Iacopelli added to the score with two goals of his own that were just 2:43 apart.

Trevor Gorsuch started between the pipes for the Broncos and made 17 saves.

Western completed the series sweep on Saturday night, defeating the RedHawks 5-2.

Gorsuch’s 29 saves were good enough to earn the win for Western.

The Broncos were down 2-1 entering the second period. McMullen was the lone Western goal scorer in the first.

WMU went on to score four unanswered goals to go on to win the game handily.

Lawton Courtnall tied the game for the Broncos with a goal at 8:04. Iacopelli had another big night, scoring two goals in the final four minutes of the second to give the Broncos a commanding lead.

Freshman Wade Allison scored the final goal of the game with just over three minutes to go in the third, making the final score 5-2.

Ferris State splits series with Bowling Green

The Bulldogs traveled to Ohio on Friday for a weekend series, where they began things with a 4-1 loss to the Falcons.

A strong three-goal first period for the Falcons would prove insurmountable for the Bulldogs as they managed to notch just one tally in the game.

Tyler Spezia opened the scoring for the Falcons with a goal just 4:51 into the game. Less than two minutes later Matt Pohlkamp added to the lead with a goal on the man advantage.

Freshman Dominic Lutz got his first collegiate goal under his belt with 7:10 left to play, capitalizing on a Bulldog power play to bring the game to within one.

The Falcons quickly responded to regain their two-goal lead with a tally from Alec Rauhauser 22 seconds later.

Mitch McLain’s goal late in the second period would conclude the scoring for the game and secure the win for Bowling Green.

Darren Smith made 30 saves in the loss.

FSU was able to turn things around on Saturday as they topped the Falcons 3-1.

Justin Kapelmaster started in net for the Bulldogs and turned away 26 shots.

Ferris got on the board 6:26 into the first period when freshman Taylor Fernandez got his second goal of the season.

The score would stay at 1-0 until 8:52 of the second period when BGSU tied the game off a tally from Lukas Craggs.

Andrew Dorantes regained the lead for the Bulldogs under four minutes later with his second goal of the season that would end up being the game winner.

Senior Gerald Mayhew scored on a shorthanded effort to pad the Bulldog lead early in the final period to help secure the victory.

Lake Superior State dominates in home series opener

The Lakers hosted the No. 10-ranked Minnesota State Mavericks on Friday night, defeating them 5-1.

Gordon Defiel made 24 saves for the Lakers, making him a perfect 6-0-0 to start the season.

Josh Nenadal opened the scoring for the Lakers early, scoring just under two minutes into the campaign. The goal is his first of the season.

The Lakers added to their lead with Brayden Gelsinger’s fourth goal of the season coming just 1:37 later.

Marc Michaelis cut the LSSU lead in half with his goal in second period. Gage Torrel responded for the Lakers, notching his team-leading fifth goal of the season and putting the score at 3-1 entering the final period.

Lake State continued to pour on the offense with a goal from freshman Max Humitz in the third.

Later, Diego Cuglietta was able to hit the empty net with under 30 seconds to go to ensure the win for the Lakers.

The Mavericks then overcame the Lakers on Saturday night, snatching a 2-1 victory in a much tighter game.

The scoring didn’t start until Brad McClure scored on the power play for Minnesota State with 48 seconds left to go in the opening period.

Jordan Nelson extended the Maverick lead midway through the second period, making it 2-0.

J.T. Henke got the Lakers on the board with his fourth goal of the season, but Jason Pawloski was stalwart in net to prevent the Laker comeback.

Defiel suffered his first loss of the season. His 23 saves were not enough for the LSSU team that lost the offensive touch it had the previous night.

Michigan State trades wins in home series with Tech

The Spartans hosted the Huskies on Friday night, winning 3-2 in overtime.

Zach Osburn opened the scoring for MSU with a goal 7:33 into the first period. The Huskies answered 32 seconds later with Mason Blacklock’s first goal of the season to tie it up.

Tech had the lead for most of the second period. Jake Lucchini scored 2:53 into the stanza, making it 2-1 until Mason Appleton found the back of the net on the power play with under four minutes to go.

The 2-2 tie would end up sending the game to overtime, when Appleton again scored on the man advantage shortly into the extra frame.

Ed Minney’s 22 saves earned him his second consecutive win, while Angus Redmond turned away 13 shots for the Huskies.

Saturday was a different story, as Tech exploded to earn a 5-1 win over MSU.

Redmond had to make just 17 saves in a game where his team was dominant.

The Huskies set the tone early with a goal from Mark Auk 4:55 into the period. Joel L’Esperance added to the lead just 11 seconds later, finding the back of the net for the second time this year.

Taro Hirose scored State’s only goal of the game with 4:19 to go in the period to bring the Spartans to within one.

The Huskies kept rolling in the second with Shane Hanna’s 5-on-3 power play tally midway through the period.

Reid Sturos and Chris Leibinger each got goals in the first five minutes of the third to bury the Spartans.

Freshman John Lethemon started in goal for MSU, making 23 saves in the loss.

Northern splits away series with Wisconsin

The Wildcats traveled to Madison on Friday and defeated the Badgers 5-2 in a strong showing.

Mathias Israelsson made an impressive 34 saves to maintain the Wildcats’ lead.

Just 33 seconds into the bout, Zach Diamantoni found the back of the net to give the Wildcats an early 1-0 lead.

Trent Frederic evened the score 10 minutes later with his goal on a Wisconsin power play.

With under five minutes to go in the first, Dominik Shine got his first goal of the season to regain Northern’s lead.

Shine struck again early in the second to extend the lead. Less than two minutes later, Filip Starzynski found the back of the net to make it a commanding 4-1 in favor of the Wildcats.

It wasn’t until 14:36 into the third that there would be another goal. Seamus Malone beat Israelsson on a penalty shot to pull the Badgers to within two.

An empty netter from Gerard Hanson would finish off the Badgers and give the game its final 5-2 score.

On Saturday, it was a much different tale, as the Wildcats’ offense disappeared in a 2-0 loss.

Atte Tolvanen made 33 saves in the effort but still suffered a loss because of his non-existent goal support.

Scoring didn’t come until USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program alum Luke Kunin got the Badgers on the board with a power play tally in the final two minutes of the second period.

Wisconsin’s other goal would also come on the power play when Cameron Hughes got one past Tolvanen with 1:05 left in the game.

Jack Berry’s 22 saves were good enough to be perfect for the Badgers.
