Here’s how Michigan’s D-I schools fared in NCAA action this past weekend.

Michigan trades wins with Boston University

Michigan took a big upset win against Boston University on Friday, shutting out the No. 4 team 4-0.

Freshman Hayden Lavigne continued to impress for the Wolverines, earning his second shutout this season with a 30-save performance.

The Michigan special teams effort was flawless as they converted on both of their power-play opportunities and killed off all six penalties they faced.

Midway through the first period, Michigan opened the scoring with a goal on the power play from Will Lockwood. The Wolverines didn’t wait long to strike again, notching another goal on the man advantage from Tony Calderone just 37 seconds later.

Jake Slaker put Michigan up by three shortly into the third. Calderone put the game away for the Wolverines with an empty net tally for his second goal of the game.

But on Saturday, a dominant third period by Boston led them to victory over Michigan when they won 4-2.

Michigan took the lead at 2:11 of the first period off of Brendan Warren’s first of the season. The 1-0 score remained until Dante Fabbro got the equalizer goal on the power play at 5:28 of the second period.

Boston controlled much of the play in the third. Charlie McAvoy gave BU their first lead of the game at 9:04. The Wolverines tied it up again just over a minute later when Dexter Dancs got his first of the season.

Jordan Greenway and Patrick Harper each scored within three minutes to give Boston the 4-2 win.

Jack LaFontaine made 30 saves for the Wolverines.

MSU earns a series split with Ferris

Ferris State opened up their series against Michigan State with a 4-1 victory on Thursday.

The Bulldogs scored on three power play opportunities to lift themselves over the Spartans.

Justin Kapelmaster had a solid performance in net for Ferris, making 31 saves to keep the game out of reach for the Spartans.

Mitch Maloney got the Bulldogs on the board first with a power-play goal at 11:59 of the first period.

Gerald Mayhew added to the lead early in the second period with another goal on the power play. Then, Joe Rutkowski found the back of the net 40 seconds later to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead and full control of the game.

Villiam Haag made sure the Spartans didn’t get shut out with his tally on the man advantage midway through the middle frame.

State had some chances in the third but couldn’t find the back of the net. An empty net goal from Corey Mackin ensured the win for Ferris.

Michigan State evened up the series on Saturday when they defeated the Bulldogs in a close 4-3 game.

Ed Minney stopped 20 shots for State while Darren Smith turned away 21 for Ferris.

State struck early with a goal from Sam Saliba just over a minute into play. The rest of the period belonged to the Bulldogs.

Andrew Mayer got the equalizer for Ferris at the 4:04 mark. Then, Mayhew and Jared VanWormer got tallies of their own less than two minutes later to make it 3-1 after the first.

A power play goal sparked the Spartans comeback win at 4:18 of the second period when Mason Appleton beat Smith.

There were no more goals until Joe Cox tied the game for the Spartans midway through the third period.

Appleton got his second of the night just over a minute later for the MSU go-ahead goal. The Spartans were able to hang onto the one-goal lead until time expired.

Western splits away series with No. 1 Minnesota-Duluth

Some late-game heroics lifted Western over Minnesota-Duluth on Friday night as the Broncos won 4-3 on the road.

With just 30 seconds left in the game and the score tied 3-3, Colt Conrad found the back of the net, beating goaltender Hunter Miska and winning the game for the Broncos.

All of the other scoring in the game came from an action-packed first period. Aidan Muir gave WMU the lead at 7:57 of the first with his goal on the power play. Duluth answered minutes later when Alex Iafallo scored to tie the game up.

Joey Anderson got a tally at 14:23 to give the Bulldogs the lead. Just over a minute later Parker Mackay expanded on that lead to make it 3-1.

Western responded quickly with a team-leading tenth goal of the season from Matheson Iacopelli to bring the Broncos to within one. Colt Conrad scored his first goal of the night with seconds remaining in the first to tie it up.

Trevor Gorsuch started in goal for the Broncos and made 21 saves.

A couple of power play goals lifted the Bulldogs over the Broncos on Saturday night as Minnesota-Duluth defeated WMU 2-0.

Gorsuch’s career high 33 saves were not enough on a night when his team could not find the back of the net.

Miska turned away all 30 Western shots to earn his third shutout of the season.

The game-winning goal came from Iafallo at the 14:44 mark of the first.

Kyle Osterberg gave the Bulldogs some added insurance when he found the back of the net midway through the second.

There was no scoring in the third period.

Northern kept winless on the weekend

Northern Michigan was dominated by Bowling Green Friday night, losing 5-1 at home.

Atte Tolvanen stopped 25 shots in the loss.

A power play goal from Sean Walker got the Falcons on the board in the first five minutes of play. Bowling Green struck two more times to close out the period with goals from Kevin Dufour and Matt Pohlkamp, making it 3-0.

Northern’s lone goal of the game came from Troy Loggins just over five minutes into the second.

Bowling Green scored two more times in the third with goals coming from Brett D’Andrea and Mitch McLain, giving the Falcons a decisive victory.

The Wildcats made it a closer game on Saturday but came up short again, losing 5-3.

Bowling Green got on the board first when Matt Meier found the back of the net just 2:40 into the game. Brendan Jacques tied the game for the Wildcats with his first career goal five minutes later.

The only Northern lead of the game came at 13:17 of the first when Filip Starzynski fired in the go-ahead goal.

The Falcons evened the score with just 49 seconds to go in the period with a goal from Mark Friedman.

Dufour’s goal at 5:16 of the second put Bowling Green on top. The Wildcats converted on a power play opportunity late in the period when Brock Maschmeyer found the back of the net to make the game locked at 3-3.

John Schilling regained the lead for the Falcons midway through the period with what would end up being the game-winning goal. Pohlkamp put the game away with an empty netter late in the game.

Tolvanen made just nine saves in the game.

Michigan Tech remains undefeated on home ice

Michigan Tech continued their undefeated home win streak on Friday when they beat Lake Superior State 6-1.

Angus Redmond made 24 saves for the Huskies and improved to 4-1-0.

The Huskies opened up the scoring late in the first with a pair of goals. Jake Jackson got the first one at 17:18. A minute and a half later Chris Leibinger added to the lead to make it 2-0 at the end of the first.

Alex Smith found the back of the net at 3:31 of the second. The lone goal of the period dug quite a hole for Lake State.

The offensive showcase continued into the third period with Gavin Gould’s tally at 2:34. Kyle Chatham got the Lakers to within three with his goal midway through the period, but it was too little too late. Jackson and Gould each found the back of the net again later in the period to close out the game.

Gordon Defiel stopped 24 shots in the loss.

The streak continued on Saturday as the Huskies defeated the Lakers again with a score of 4-2.

Redmond got the start in net again for the Huskies and was good for 18 saves. Defiel was between the pipes for the Lakers but his impressive 43 saves were not enough to salvage a win.

A power-play goal from Jake Lucchini got Tech on the board first at 5:25 of the first period. Diego Cuglietta answered for the Lakers midway through the period to tie it up heading into the second.

The Lakers had the lead for most of the middle period. Gage Torrel found the back of the net just over two minutes in, making the score 2-1 until Joel L’Esperance tied the game for the Huskies at 16:05.

Tech pulled off the win thanks to extensive power play opportunities in the third period. Tyler Heinonen got the game-winning goal past Defiel at 6:38 while the Huskies were on the man advantage. L’Esperance put the game out of reach for the Lakers with his second tally of the night on the power play late in the game.
