By @MichaelCaples –

Zach Werenski has more points than Auston Matthews.

Sure, it might not stay that way by the end of the season, but Werenski’s play so far this season has him firmly in the talk for Calder Trophy nominees as top rookies in the NHL.

At the moment, the Grosse Pointe native has 13 points – one more than his former USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program teammate in Matthews. If Werenski, fresh off a two-year stint at the University of Michigan where he prepared for his NHL career with the Columbus Blue Jackets, really wants to take a jab at Matthews with that fun statistic, he could also point out that he has two more points than the Leafs’ super prospect.

Werenski’s latest point was one worth sharing (hence this post). With his team down one late in the third period, he fired a perfect shot – one that certainly has his former coaches at Belle Tire and Little Caesars beaming with pride.

And by the way, Blue Jackets fans – he’s got even better celebrations in store. See: MiHockeyMag cover from last winter. #Violin
