The hockey folks in Ann Arbor are excited about the Wolverines’ freshmen goaltenders, and one of them is already garnering Big Ten weekly awards.

Hayden Lavigne was named the Big Ten’s second star of the week in the conference’s first weekly stars list, after he had an impressive showing against Union over the weekend.

In his first career NCAA start, Lavigne stopped all 31 shots he faced on Saturday night, leading the Wolverines to a shutout victory during their ALS Awareness Game.

Lavigne, a native of Brampton, Ont., played in the USHL prior to Michigan; last season, he posted a 26-9-2 record, a 2.26 goals-against average and a .914 save percentage with the Bloomington Thunder.
