Thanks to a third-period strike from Drew Miller, the Red Wings picked up their second win of the 2016-17 season Wednesday night.

Detroit topped the New York Rangers 2-1 at Madison Square Garden, which improved their record to 2-2-0 on the year.

Miller and Thomas Vanek scored for the Wings, while Jimmy Howard made 32 saves in his first start of the 2016-17 campaign.

“Every game is a statement,” Howard told NHL.com after the game. “Every single night you’ve got to go out there and reprove yourself. If you don’t do that, this game can chew you up and spit you out.”

Vanek now has three goals and three assists for six points in four games with his new club. Miller’s goal was the East Lansing native’s first of the season.

Mika Zibanejad scored the lone goal for the Blueshirts, while Henrik Lundqvist stopped 16 of the 18 shots sent his way.
