The Detroit Red Wings are beginning training camp with some contract news.

On the first day of their on-ice training in Traverse City for the 2016-17 season, the Wings announced that they have signed defenseman Ryan Sproul to a new two-year contract.

Sproul, 23, was the Red Wings’ second-round pick in the 2011 NHL Draft.

A product of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the OHL, Sproul has spent three seasons in the Wings’ organization, skating almost exclusively for the Grand Rapids Griffins (he played in one Red Wings game in 2013-14).

Last year, he posted a AHL career-best 35 points in 75 games.

Sproul was the last restricted free agent who needed to be re-signed by the Wings.
