Mitchell Chaffee is on his way to Massachusetts – at least in a year or two.

The 5-foot-11, 196-pound forward announced on Wednesday that he has committed to new coach Greg Carvel and the UMass Minutemen.

Chaffee, a native of Rockford and a product of the Michigan Nationals (now Fox Motors) and Honeybaked, played his first USHL season with the Bloomington Thunder last season.

“I picked Umass because of the great opportunity to grow as a player,” Chaffee told MiHockey shortly after his announcement.

Chaffee recorded seven goals and six assists for 13 points in 54 games as a rookie with the Thunder last season.

He said he’s excited to be a part of the UMass transition under Carvel and to have a chance to compete in the prestigious Hockey East conference.

“They just got a new coaching staff,” Chaffee said, “and after meeting them it was a no brainier playing for these coaches and playing in arguably the best conference in college hockey.”
