Michigan State announced today that they have added a new student assistant coach who is certainly recognizable to Spartan hockey fans.

Former All-American Mike York is returning to East Lansing to complete his degree in communication, and while doing so, he’s going to work with his alma mater’s hockey program.

We are thrilled that Mike York will be joining our staff,” coach Tom Anastos said in a release. “Mike has a wealth of playing experience and is one of our program’s all-time greats. He is passionate about the game, Michigan State University and Spartan hockey; he’ll be a terrific addition to our staff.”

York played at MSU from 1995-99 before embarking on a 17-year professional career that included 10 seaesons in the NHL. The Waterford native was a two-time All-American selection at MSU, and he was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award twice, as well.

“I’m really happy to again be a part of the Michigan State hockey program,” York said. “This all came about really quickly and I’m excited. I love the game and want to stay involved with it, so this will be a great learning experience. I’m ready to get going.”
