Griffins release 2016-17 AHL schedule

The Grand Rapids Griffins released their 2016-17 schedule on Monday.

This season marks the Griffins’ 21st as a franchise, 16th in the American Hockey League and 15th as the AHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings.

The Griffins will open their 76-game season at Van Andel Arena for the 11th time in history, this one coming on Friday, Oct. 14 against at the Chicago Wolves. Grand Rapids will then head to Chicago the very next day for its road opener and the tail end of a home-and-home set.

The home finale will be played Friday, April 14 when the Griffins host the Charlotte Checkers, with the season finale coming one day later on the road in Milwaukee.

Some highlights of the schedule include:

  • Out of 38 home games, 27 will take place on Friday (17) and Saturday (10).
  • Five-game homestands from Jan. 20-28 and Feb. 15-25 mark the longest such stretch of the season.
  • A seven-game road trip from Feb. 28-March 12 marks the longest such trip of the season.
  • The Griffins will play their first-ever games against the San Jose Barracuda (Jan. 27 at home) and Stockton Heat (Jan. 28 at home).
  • The Griffins’ 20th annual New Year’s Eve celebration takes place Saturday, Dec. 31 against Rockford
  • Twelve games (including six at home) against defending Calder Cup Champion Cleveland Monsters
