The Red Wings locked up one of their native sons Thursday morning.

The Original Six franchise announced that they have signed Grand Rapids native Luke Glendening to a four-year contract extension.

Glendening, 27, just concluded his third season with his hometown NHL club, scoring eight goals and adding 13 assists in 81 games.

A product of the University of Michigan from 2008-2012, Glendening went undrafted during his college career, but he seized an opportunity with the Toledo Walleye to earn a call-up to the Grand Rapids Griffins in his first professional season of 2012-13. One year later, he ended up playing in 51 games with the Red Wings.

Known as a face-off specialist and a sound defensive forward, Glendening has become another Michigan hockey success story. He walked on at the University of Michigan, only to become captain by his junior season, and earned his way up through the professional ranks, as well.

In 219 NHL games, Glendening has recorded 21 goals and 25 assists for 46 total points.
