Griffins sign former Buckeyes goaltender Calvin Heeter

The Griffins have added a former Buckeye to their roster.

Grand Rapids announced today the signing of goaltender Calvin Heeter to a standard player’s contract for the 2016-17 season.

Heeter, a native of St. Louis, Mo., played for Ohio State from 2008-2012, earning three Academic All-Big Ten selections and numerous team accolades with the Buckeyes.

The 27-year-old spent the 2015-16 season playing with the Hamburg Freezers of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga and the Zagreb Medvescak of the Kontinental Hockey League.

Undrafted by an NHL club, he has carved out a four-year professional career with a 54-64-11 record, a 2.83 goals-against average and .907 save percentage from games with the Adirondack Phantoms (AHL), Trenton Titans (ECHL), Philadelphia Flyers (NHL), Evansville Icemen (ECHL), Toronto Marlies (AHL), Zagreb and Hamburg.

He earned bronze with Team USA at the 2013 World Championship, as well.
