USA Hockey announced today a new goaltending initiative to help ‘tenders grow across the country.

The governing body for hockey in the U.S. has appointed goaltending development coordinators, a group that “will serve USA Hockey affiliates locally while also forming a nationwide network tasked with enhancing grassroots goalie development in the United States.”

Per USA Hockey, the coordinators’ duties include working with local goalie coaches, holding meetings with clubs and associations to lead stronger goaltender training curriculum and leading USA Hockey’s student goaltending coach programs.

Darren Eliot – former Red Wings goaltender and TV analyst for Fox Sports Detroit – will serve as Michigan’s development coordinator.

“Adding more resources and support for goaltenders, both on the national level and the local level, is a priority for USA Hockey and our American Development Model,” said Phil Osaer, USA Hockey ADM manager for goaltending, in a release. “The goaltending development coordinators will play an important role in that process, giving young goaltenders support and guidance from experienced coaches with a wealth of goaltending experience.”
