The Red Wings announced today that they have found one of their new assistant coaches.

Doug Houda, a former Red Wings draft pick as a player, is coming to Detroit after working as an assistant coach in Boston for the last 10 seasons.

Detroit is still looking for another assistant coach, as well as a new goaltending coach. The club opted to not retain long-time goalie coach Jim Bedard, while assistant coach Pat Ferschweiler has been reassigned, and will now watch games from the press box. Ferschweiler was in charge of the Red Wings’ power play during his first season with the Original Six franchise in 2015-16.

For Houda, Hockeytown is a familiar place. He played for the Wings for parts of five seasons from 1985-91, then returned for three games during the 1998-99 season. Houda played in a total of 561 NHL games during the course of his career, which concluded in 2003.

After two seasons working as an assistant coach for the Rochester Americans of the AHL from 2004-06, Houda joined the Bruins’ staff and was a mainstay behind the bench ever since.
