Olympia Entertainment has officially announced that when the Wolverines and Spartans annually meet at Joe Louis Arena, they will now play for a new trophy.

As part of the “Duel in the D” game, Michigan and Michigan State will now battle for the “Iron D” trophy.

The new trophy, built by Erik and Israel Nordin at the Detroit Design Center, will feature a large “D” in the center of a trophy crafted out of iron. The Detroit skyline and the new Detroit Events Center (future home of the Red Wings) will be highlighted at the base of the trophy.

“We always love coming to play at The Joe,” said Michigan head coach Red Berenson in the release. “A lot of our players grew up watching the Red Wings and watching Michigan play Michigan State. It’s a big thrill for them, it’s a big thrill for the coaches, and our fans love it as well. And now having a trophy emblematic of this game and this competition will be terrific.”

“It’s always exciting for our players to come back and play in Detroit,” said Michigan State head coach Tom Anastos in the release. “All the energy going on in the city today, the great history of the Red Wings and the support of college hockey from the Ilitches make this game a circled date on the calendar. The addition of the trophy adds a new twist to the rivalry and we’re looking forward to being a part of it.”

The Wolverines and Spartans will renew their rivalry when they meet at The Joe on Feb. 5. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

The two rivals have met at least once per season at Joe Louis Arena since 1990, and Michigan holds a 14-10-4 record over Michigan State.
