Bulldogs’ Mackin claims WCHA rookie award again; MTU’s Phillips top defensive player

For the second straight week, Ferris State’s Corey Mackin has been deemed the top freshman in his conference.

The Bulldogs rookie forward was named the WCHA’s rookie of the week for the second straight week on Monday, after a big outing in Alaska.

Mackin, a Philadelphia native, had a three-point night against Alaska Anchorage on Friday, helping his Bulldogs to a 3-2 series-opening road win. The rookie forward scored the Bulldogs’ first goal during a first-period power play, then he picked up assists on Ferris State’s second and third goals, the latter of which being Kyle Schempp’s overtime game-winner.

Phillips named defensive player of the week

Michigan Tech goaltender Jamie Phillips was named the defensive player of the week after he set a new franchise mark over the weekend. Phillips, in his second year as Michigan Tech’s full-time starter, broke the Huskies’ 95-year-old program’s all-time record for shutouts when he picked up his eighth on Friday night. Phillips blanked No. 15 Bowling Green with 22 saves. He stopped 22 more in a loss on Saturday, finishing the weekend with a .936 save percentage and 1.51 goals-against average.
