By @StefanKubus –

As part of the 2015 International Ice Hockey Federation World Girls’ Ice Hockey Weekend, nearly 140 locations across 34 U.S. states are participating in the weekend events to celebrate girls hockey, which take place this Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 10-11. Eight locations across Michigan are set to participate.

The overall goal of the event is to help grow girls hockey worldwide, while teaching girls basic skills and teamwork in a fun environment, informing about opportunities to play ice hockey in their local communities and allowing the chance to meet new friends and potentially fall in love with a new sport.

Also, new this year is the IIHF’s inaugural Girls Global Game, which will feature 29 different countries hosting successive one-hour games in a 24-hour span from Saturday to Sunday. And in conjunction with the Girls Global Game, USA Hockey will also highlight select one-hour games at varying age levels across the U.S. on Oct. 10 (8 a.m. to 12 a.m.) and Oct. 11 (7 a.m. to 10 p.m.). Two games in Michigan on Saturday are on that list: a 12U Kensington Valley Ravens-Livonia Knights contest at Eddie Edgar Ice Arena in Livonia from 10-11 a.m. and a women’s ACHA DIII game at Munn Arena in East Lansing between Michigan State and the Michigan High School Selects from 2-3 p.m.

Some of the Girls’ Hockey Weekend Events

Eddie Edgar Ice Arena (Livonia) – Livonia Hockey Association is hosting 10U, 12U and 14U games Saturday (Oct. 10), with some ice time available for all girls attending the event to come out on the ice in a Try Girls Hockey event. A lunch will be available as well as a custard stand from the local Culvers restaurant. More information…
