Welcome to another season of MiHockey’s Michi-gamer! We take great pride in our homegrown talent. Whether they grew up in the Mitten or we welcomed them here for college or juniors, they are our own. They represent the best place in the world for hockey. Every morning, we pick one Michi-gamer from the previous night’s slate of games across all professional levels of hockey – one Michigan player who stood out above the rest.

copp headshotOCTOBER 9 – ANDREW COPP

It won’t go down as his first NHL goal, but it was pretty dang close. Ann Arbor native Andrew Copp has cracked the Winnipeg Jets’ 2015-16 season-opening roster, and he picked up an assist in his first outing of the season with his NHL club. The former captain of the Wolverines fired a shot towards the Boston Bruins goal, and the puck hit Nicolas Petan’s foot and went into the back of the net. There was a crowd in front of the goal, and had the puck hit Torey Krug’s foot instead of Petan’s, Copp would have crossed ‘first NHL goal’ off his hockey bucket list. Either way, Copp now has two assists in two career NHL games (he picked up one tally in his first NHL game last year), and he’s off to a great start to 2015-16 in Winnipeg.

 OCTOBER 8 – MAX PACIORETTY pacioretty

The freshly-crowned 29th captain in Montreal Canadiens history wasted no time making his presence felt in the 2015-16 campaign. University of Michigan alumnus Max Pacioretty potted a pair of goals in the Habs’ season opener Wednesday night en route to a 3-1 victory, spoiling the Maple Leafs’ home opener for Mike Babcock and his team. The 26-year-old Pacioretty has never hit the 40-goal mark in his career, scoring 33, 39 and 37 in different seasons to date, but in the prime of his career and with a quick start Wednesday, he could be well on his way. Pacioretty, of course, played under Red Berenson for the Wolverines in 2007-08, tallying 15 goals and 39 points in 37 games.
