Talk about a great start to your freshman season.

University of Michigan forward Kyle Connor was named the Big Ten’s first star of the week after an exceptional start to his NCAA career, the conference announced today.

Connor, a Shelby Township native, scored twice in Michigan’s 6-4 win over Mercyhurst on Friday, then added the game-winning goal on Sunday in the rematch. He also added an assist on the weekend.

A first-round pick of the Winnipeg Jets, Connor impressed from the start, scoring his first NCAA goal on a shorthanded breakaway in the first period of his first game. He finished Friday night with an empty-netter to wrap up the Wolverines’ win.

Meanwhile, UM teammate Justin Selman was named the week’s third star. Selman, a native of Upper Saddle River, N.J., recorded three assists on the weekend, including setting up Connor for the game-winner on Sunday.
