When the Saginaw Spirit and Flint Firebirds officially begin their new Ontario Hockey League rivalry, there will be some hardware on the line.

The two OHL clubs will battle for the Coors Light I-75 Divide Cup during the Firebirds’ inaugural season, adding to what both clubs hope will be a heated rivalry on the ice for many years to come.

“Starting our 14th season and on behalf of Spirit Owner Dick Garber, the OHL Executive Council and the OHL Board of Governors, it’s a true honor to welcome the community of Flint-Genesee and the Flint Firebirds to the Ontario Hockey League,” Spirit president Craig Goslin said in a release. “I expect a highly contested rivalry that is second to none in the OHL between the Spirit and the Firebirds that will have fans from both communities engaged and very entertained.”

To kick off their season and the new rivalry series on Thursday, the Spirit will be having a Coors Light I-75 Divide Cup Fan Fest at the First Merit Bank Event Park, starting at 5:00 p.m. Puck drops on both clubs’ seasons at 7:05 p.m. that night at the Dow Event Center.

“We invite the fans from both teams to meet us for the Fan Fest that goes from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday and also to see the Coors Light I-75 Divide Trophy unveiling. Fans will also get complimentary hamburgers and Frito Lay chips at the First Merit Bank Event Park while supplies last. The park is located immediately across the street from the Dow Event Center. I invite the communities to come be part of history as we begin our rivalry together on Thursday.”
