Red Wings, Zetterberg announce 14th annual smoke detector collection

The Detroit Red Wings and captain Henrik Zetterberg announced Wednesday the 14th annual Smoke Detector Collection, taking place during Thursday’s game against Pittsburgh and Saturday’s game against Boston.

Fans coming to either of those two preseason contests are asked to bring smoke detectors to Joe Louis Arena, but those who do not may also make monetary donations.

Volunteers from local fire departments and Comerica Bank will be present to assist with the collection. All detectors will be given to low-income and elderly households across Michigan.

The Red Wings’ captain – in his tenth year as spokesman for the collection – will personally match all smoke detector and monetary donations, up to $15,000. Last year saw more than 2,200 detectors and Zetterberg donated $9,700 to purchase additional smoke detectors.

The Smoke Detector Collection was originally created in 2001 by former Red Wings forward Brendan Shanahan to honor the memory of his father, who was a firefighter. More than 26,000 detectors have been donated to fire departments throughout Michigan since the program’s inception.
