Fans planning on heading to Joe Louis Arena for a Red Wings game this season should take note of a new bag policy.

The rule change will significantly limit what fans can bring into the arena, but also help speed up the process at which fans can enter the arena.

Here’s the text from the Wings’ release on the matter:

Beginning with the Red Wings first preseason home game on Tuesday, Sept. 23 against the Chicago Blackhawks, fans will only be able to carry the following style and size bag, package or container into Joe Louis Arena for all Red Wings games. Guests with a non-compliant bag will be asked to return their bag to their vehicle before entering The Joe.

  • Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12” x 6” x 12.”
  • One-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag or similar style).
  • Small clutch bags not exceeding 9” x 6” – approximately the size of a hand, with or without a handle or strap – can be taken into The Joe with one of the clear plastic bag options above.

The new policy is designed to shorten lines by speeding the security screening process for fans as they enter Joe Louis Arena, while also providing an increased sense of safety and supporting the Department of Homeland Security’s “If You See Something, Say Something” campaign.

Items not allowed include, but are not limited to, purses larger than a clutch bag, coolers, briefcases, backpacks, fanny packs, cinch bags, seat cushions, luggage of any size, computer bags, camera bags or any bag larger than the permissible size. An exception will be made for medically necessary items and diaper bags after proper inspection at a designated door.

The Wings point out in the release that their new policies are similar to those of all 32 NFL teams, along with the policies set forth at Michigan Stadium and Spartan Stadium.
