Mel Pearson will be looking for an assistant coach this summer.

The USHL’s Tri-City Storm (Kearney, Neb.) announced their new head coach and GM today, and they have lured Bill Muckalt away from the Michigan Tech Huskies.

Muckalt, an assistant coach at MTU for the last four seasons, will take over for Jim Hulton, who was let go after two seasons with the Storm.

“I’m extremely excited about the opportunity to go to work for [team owner] Kirk Brooks and continue to grow the culture and build a championship team with Tri-City,” Muckalt said via the Storm’s official site. “I’m looking forward to working with our players to help them improve in the developmental path to college hockey and hopefully one day the National Hockey League. More importantly, I can’t wait to be part of the community and I look forward to getting to Kearney and meeting the fans.”

Muckalt was a four-year letter winner for the University of Michigan from 1994-98, helping the Wolverines win two national titles during his days in Ann Arbor. After UM, he played five seasons in the NHL, recording 40 goals and 57 assists.

“Bill comes highly recommended and has done a great job at Michigan Tech,” Brooks said. “We are excited to have a coach of his caliber in Kearney, and we expect him to build off the recent success we’ve had with a highly talented roster.”

Muckalt has been behind the bench during a significant turnaround for the Huskies’ program, one that saw MTU win 20 games for the first time since 1982-83.
