The Stephen Weiss experiment in Detroit is now over.

The Red Wings have bought out the remainder of Weiss’ contract ($16 million over the next three seasons) to officially release the former Plymouth Whalers star, according to Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press.

Weiss, 32, was thought to be an upgrade for a departing Valtteri Filppula two summers ago. Instead, Weiss struggled in Detroit, playing in only 78 games over two seasons, and recording only 29 points.

Per GeneralFanager.com, the buy-out will save the Wings $3.8 million in cap space this upcoming season (full breakdown here).

Expectations were high for the former No. 4 overall pick coming from the Florida Panthers. He was routinely finding the 20-goal club during his days down south, but he couldn’t find the same scoring consistency in Detroit.
