Red Wings re-sign Brendan Smith to two-year deal

The Detroit Red Wings just locked up one of their defensemen.

Brendan Smith, who was a restricted free agent heading into this off-season, has signed a new two-year contract with the Wings, they just announced.

The 26-year-old, entering his sixth professional season with Detroit, has played in a total of 195 games with the Wings over the last four years. In that span, he has recorded 10 goals, 37 assists and 185 penalty minutes.

This past season, he posted four goals and nine assists for 13 points in 76 games, along with a minus-2 rating.

The Red Wings do not release contract numbers, but per SiriusXM NHL Network, it’s for a total of $5.5 million, or $2.75 million per year.

A University of Wisconsin alum, Smith was a first-round pick (27th overall) of the Red Wings in the 2007 NHL Draft.

Other restricted free agents that the Red Wings still need to sign include Gustav Nyquist, Tomas Jurco and Teemu Pulkkinen.
