OHL releases 2015-16 schedule; check out the Firebirds and Spirit’s season outlooks

The Ontario Hockey League has released their 2015-16 season schedule, which gives fans their first look at the inaugural season for the Flint Firebirds.

The Firebirds franchise will officially begin OHL play against their new neighbors – the Saginaw Spirit – at the Dow Event Center in Saginaw on Thursday, Sept. 24 at 7:11 p.m.

Two days later, the two Michigan clubs will break in the renovated Perani Arena in Flint for the Firebirds’ first home game. That game will start at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26.

From there, the Firebirds make their first trip outside of the state, playing Owen Sound on Sept. 30, Erie on Oct. 3, Mississauga on Oct. 4 and Sault Ste. Marie on Oct. 7.

Their first homestand begins after that road trip, with games against Sarnia, Peterborough and Ottawa from Oct. 10-16.

The two Michigan clubs will square off on the following dates:

  • Thursday, Sept. 24 – Flint at Saginaw
  • Saturday, Sept. 26 – Saginaw at Flint
  • Wednesday, Oct. 28 – Flint at Saginaw (10:45 a.m. puck drop)
  • Wednesday, Nov. 25 – Saginaw at Flint
  • Friday, Dec. 4 – Saginaw at Flint
  • Wednesday, Dec. 16 – Flint at Saginaw
  • Wednesday, Feb. 3 – Flint at Saginaw
  • Wednesday, March 2 – Saginaw at Flint

Meanwhile, the Spirit settle into their schedule after the two openers with the Firebirds by taking on the Spitfires in Windsor on Oct. 1. Their first big homestand takes place from Oct. 25-Nov. 7.
