The University of Michigan hockey team announced an addition to their coaching staff today, and he’s certainly a familiar name.

Wolverines alum Steve Shields, a former NHL goaltender, is joining the team as a volunteer assistant coach.

“We’re fortunate to have a coach with Steve Shields’ résumé work with our goaltenders,” coach Red Berenson said in a release. “Steve was a great goalie at Michigan and then went on to have a solid NHL career. He still has the passion for the position and for Michigan. We think this will be a great benefit to our program and to our goalies.”

Shields played for UM from 1990-94, leading the Wolverines to two CCHA titles and two Frozen Four appearances.

“The University of Michigan has always been home to me,” Shields said in the release. “I feel very fortunate for the opportunity to work alongside Coach Berenson, Billy Powers and Brian Wiseman. I’m a teacher and developmental coach at heart and coming back to Michigan allows me to continue my education and gives me the best platform to continue my developmental work with student-athletes here at Michigan. I can’t wait to give back to the University that gave me the tools to do what I am doing today. We have outstanding student-athletes, and I’m ecstatic to be a part of the hockey program again.”

A 10-year NHL goaltender, Shields, a Toronto native, has worked as a volunteer assistant coach at Michigan Tech and as a goaltending consultant for the Florida Panthers since his retirement.
