The Detroit Red Wings announced today that they are renaming the trophy presented to the NHL Prospects Tournament winning team in honor of someone the hockey community recently lost.

The participating teams at the prospects tourney in Traverse City will now be playing for the Matthew Wuest Memorial Cup.

Wuest, best known for developing the website CapGeek.com, passed away in March 2015 at age 35 after a two-year battle with colon cancer.

The NHL Prospects Tournament is played annually in September at Centre Ice Arena in Traverse City. This year, it will take place from Sept. 11-15. Participating clubs include Carolina, Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Minnesota, New York and St. Louis. The tournament has been operating since 1998.

Along with his CapGeek work, Wuest developed and maintained RedWingsCentral.com, which centered around Red Wings prospects and was a mainstay for coverage of all Red Wings and NHL-related activities in Traverse City.
