The U.S. National Team Development Program announced the hiring of a new assistant coach today, and he’s certainly a familiar name to the Michigan hockey audience.

Chris Luongo, a Fraser, Mich., native, will be joining the NTDP in May as a new assistant coach for the U.S. National Under-18 Team.

Luongo, who most recently served as the head coach of the University of Alabama-Huntsville men’s ice hockey team from 2010-12, worked as an assistant coach at Wayne State University from 2006-08 and the Motor City Mechanics of the United Hockey League from 2004-06.

A Michigan State University product (1985-89), Luongo had a 15-year professional hockey career that featured games with the Detroit Red Wings, New York Islanders and Ottawa Senators.
