On April 2, the Federal Hockey League announced that its Board of Governors has accepted a membership application for a team in Port Huron.

The team, owned and operated by Illinois native Barry Soskin, will play out of the 3,373-seat McMorran Place Sports & Entertainment Center in Port Huron.

According to a report from the Times Herald, Sorkin wants to establish a permanent professional team in the area.

“I didn’t want to go into a market and have the fans think we were going to be 1-and-done,” Soskin said in the article. “They proposed a three-year lease — I wanted to show people that I plan on being here for a while and a five-year lease was the minimum I wanted to deal with.”

The team is having a name contest on their website until April 24 – visit PortHuronHockey.com for more information.

Soskin is also the owner of the FHL’s Dayton Demonz and the Danville Dashers.

The Federal Hockey League began in 2009, with the league’s inaugural season taking place in 2010-11. The FHL classifies itself as a Single A-level professional hockey league that “emphasizes strong local ownership, high-quality competition and affordable family entertainment.”
