When the Red Wings host the Calgary Flames on Friday, they’re hoping fans who come to Joe Louis Arena will bring some school supplies with them.

Detroit is hosting a school supply item collection on Friday to provide children in low-income households the tools necessary for the classroom.

The donations will benefit Operation: Kid Equip, which has the capacity to help 70,000 Metro Detroit children – 6,000 of which are currently homeless. The Operation: Kid Equip initiative provides free school supplies, books, hygiene and food items for local children.

Items most needed are pencils, markers, crayons and glue sticks. Volunteers will be stationed at every entrance of Joe Louis Arena when doors open at 6:00 p.m. to collect all donations.
