The Western Collegiate Hockey Association announced their individual awards today, and Michigan Tech’s scoring leader took home the top trophy.

Tanner Kero was named the WCHA Player of the Year and Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year today, as the league recognized the outstanding regular season from the Hancock native.

Kero, a senior forward for the Huskies, captured the WCHA scoring crown with 13 goals and 21 assists for 34 points in 28 conference games. A Hobey Baker nominee and All-WCHA First Team pick, Kero is tied for tenth place in all of the NCAA with 43 points over-all.

He’s no slouch in the classroom, either; Kero holds a 3.72 GPA in mathematics with a concentration in actuarial sciences. He is one of ten finalists for the 2015 Senior CLASS Award, as well – Kero volunteers in the Koaches Kids reading program at elementary schools, helps with local youth hockey programs, and spends time at local charity events in the Houghton area.

Phillips makes All-WCHA First Team

Kero is joined by teammate Jamie Phillips on the All-WCHA First Team list. Phillips, a junior from Caledonia, Ont., posted a 20-4-2 record in conference play, while finishing second in the league with a .935 save percentage and third in the league with a 1.71 goals-against average.

Petan, Gould crack second-team list, Pietila makes third-team

While Kero and Phillips occupied spots on the first team, they are joined by teammates Alex Petan and Malcolm Gould on the all-team selections list. Both Petan (Delta, B.C.) and Gould (North Vancouver, B.C.) both made the second team.

Meanwhile, senior forward Blake Pietila (Brighton) made the third-team roster.

Hawkins, Valleau make WCHA All-Rookie Team

Two members of Bowling Green that are products of Michigan cracked the all-rookie team – Brandon Hawkins and Nolan Valleau. Hawkins, a Macomb native and forward for BG, recorded 14 goals and 14 assists for 28 points on the season. Valleau, a defenseman from Novi, finished with two goals, 15 assists, and a plus-three rating.
