The Michigan Metro Girls High School Hockey League state champions were crowned this past weekend at Eddie Edgar Ice Arena in Livonia.

The teams who finished first and second in each division during the regular season ultimately squared off in the state championship, too, as Grosse Pointe South Blue Devils topped the University Liggett Knights by a 2-1 final to capture the Division 1 title, while the Mercy Marlins knocked off the Bloomfield Hills Black Hawks, 7-0, to win the Division 2 title.

Led by freshman forward Lauren Kramer and junior goaltender Isabella Strickler, Grosse Pointe South capped off an impressive 19-1 season en route to the championship. Kramer led the Blue Devils in scoring with 20 goals and 35 points in 17 games, only held off the scoresheet twice during the season. Between the pipes, Strickler posted an impressive 14-1 record, .908 save percentage and 1.47 goals-against average on the year.

Meanwhile, Mercy finished the year atop the league themselves in Division 2 with 17-2-1-1 record good for 10 points better than second-place Bloomfield Hills.

Despite the Black Hawks having the league’s top four scorers, the Marlins remarkably only allowed 22 goals the entire season – by far the least of any team – thanks to the Mercy defense and junior goaltending duo of Katy Kouvaris and Caitlin Somerville, which led the league in goaltending. The two split duties, with Kouvaris and Somerville each posting winning percentages of over 85-percent. The Marlins were captained by Julia McAree and Anna Julien.

Emily McCann led the team in regular season scoring with 17 goals and 30 points and opened the scoring in the championship game. Maddie Jones had a goal and an assist, Cara Hodgins had a pair of assists, Julien potted a pair of goals and Mary Reeber, Makena Duval and Sophie VanAcher also lit the lamp for Mercy.
