Riley Sweeney picked a heck of a time to score his first two goals of the season.

The Michigan Tech senior defenseman scored on the two shots he took during the annual Winter Carnival in Houghton, both crucial goals in the Huskies’ sweep of Bemidji State.

Sweeney, a native of Delta, B.C., scored the first goal in the first game – a 3-1 win – and then added the first goal on Saturday, leading the Huskies to an eventual 2-1 win. He was named MVP of the Winter Carnival for his efforts.

The goals were the third and fourth of Sweeney’s career, which spans an impressive 146 games.

With their two wins, the Huskies have also secured home ice for their first WCHA playoff games, which will be on March 13-15, against a yet-to-be-decided opponent. Michigan Tech last hosted a home playoff series in the 1992-93 season.

Sweeney was also just named one of the WCHA’s stars of the week, as well.
