Hockey City Classic game day (live blog)

Follow along for all the action of today’s Hockey City Classic games with our live blog, which will be compiling our tweets and notes from throughout the day.

FINAL from Soldier Field – Wolverines 4, Spartans 1.

Empty-netter for Justin Selman; Wolverines regain a three-goal lead over the Spartans.

Matt DeBlouw gets Michigan State on the board when he buries a bouncing puck that hit the end boards and landed out in front of the Michigan goal.

Official announced attendance for the Hockey City Classic: 22,751 people.

Third period underway at Soldier Field.


  Wolverines hold a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes of play. On his second rebound try, captain Andrew Copp sends the puck through Jake Hildebrand and into the back of the Spartans’ net to give Michigan a 3-0 lead over their main rival.

Cutler Martin fires a shot through a crowd to give the Wolverines a 2-1 lead in the latter half of the second period. Second period underway at Soldier Field between the Spartans and Wolverines.


Michigan takes a 1-0 lead to the locker room after 20 minutes of play against rival Michigan State at Soldier Field.

FINAL in Game 1 of the Hockey City Classic – Miami RedHawks 4, Western Michigan Broncos 3

Sheldon Dries tips a point shot to make it a one-goal game with 45 seconds left in regulation. The goal – Dries’ 10th of the season – makes it 4-3.

The Broncos quickly score again to pull within two, when Aidan Muir scores on a rebound to make it 4-2.

Josh Pitt strikes for Western Michigan, giving the Broncos their first goal of the night just before the halfway mark of the third period. He took a pass in front of the Miami goal and deked Jay Williams before scoring five-hole.


For the third time, the RedHawks score another goal in the same fashion – Sean Kuraly swats a puck past Lukas Hafner after the initial shot hit the end boards and bounced back out in front of the goal. It’s now 4-0 Miami after two goals in the final two minutes of play in the middle frame.

Another rebound-off-the-end-boards goal makes it 3-0 Miami with under two minutes to go in the second period. Blake Colman is credited with the goal, with the primary assist going to Louie Belpedio.

Miami increases their lead to two when former Compuware and NTDP standout Riley Barber scores on a rebound from a shot that went wide of the net and bounced back out off the end boards onto his stick.

The ice crew is using a fire extinguisher on the ice to work on trouble spots.

Second period underway between Miami and Western Michigan.


First period comes to a close with Miami leading Western Michigan 1-0. Game’s first goal came from Miami – Alex Wideman redirected a pass from Alex Gacek just above the crease to put the RedHawks up 1-0 on the Broncos.
