UPDATE (Jan. 24, 2015): The NHL announced today that the Red Wings will indeed play the Colorado Avalanche in an outdoor game, as part of their Stadium Series. The Wings and Avs will compete outside at Coors Field in Colorado on Feb. 27, 2016.

TSN’s Bob McKenzie just tweeted something that the Hockeytown faithful will certainly be interested in.

McKenzie is reporting that the Colorado Avalanche will host an outdoor hockey game next year, and their opponent will be the Detroit Red Wings.

It’s been recently reported that the 2016 NHL Winter Classic will be played in Massachusetts, featuring the Boston Bruins and the Montreal Canadiens.

If the Wings were to play the Avalanche in an outdoor contest, it would most likely be the latest rendition of the NHL’s ‘Stadium Series’ which started last season.

It would also be the Wings’ third outdoor game in the modern era, and second time they play on the road.
